Description:
Eurypterids, commonly known as sea scorpions, are an extinct group of arthropods closely related to arachnids. These prehistoric predators include the largest arthropods to ever exist, such as Jaekelopterus, which reached over 2 meters (6 ft 7 in) in length. However, most eurypterid species were under 20 cm (8 in).
Thriving from the Ordovician to the Permian periods, these formidable creatures primarily inhabited warm, shallow waters. While early eurypterids were marine, later species adapted to brackish and freshwater environments—likely transitioning during the Pennsylvanian period. Despite their nickname, they are not true scorpions.
